What is the legion?
Any boy knows what a legion is, he builds up troops, still playing soldiers. But this word, in addition to the value of the army, there are still interpretations. Let's analyze them.
In general terms, the legion is a kind oforganizational unit of the army. For the first time legions appeared in the sixth century BC in Ancient Rome. Legions consisted of five or six thousand infantrymen, as well as several hundred horsemen. By their type of organization, the legions were a tribal militia.
It is necessary to distinguish the Roman legions from legionsother peoples. For example, the Jewish legion is a historical term, it can be attributed to the Jewish regiment of light cavalry, which participated in the Kosciuszko uprising in Poland.
In Croatia, elite infantry units were called the Black Legion. The soldiers of the Black Legion fought during the Second World War.
The Ukrainian Legion unofficially named a number of military formations, which were formed on a national basis during the First and Second World War.
