Shedding Bruce, Happy Birthday Caitlyn Jenner
With Bruce Jenner’s announcement in April that he was transgender, many wondered about the correct protocol in referring to Bruce Jenner. Some weren’t sure whether to refer to Jenner with the male pronoun of “he” or “him,” and some asked if Jenner had a new name, one that reflected the gender identity of a female. Well, the questions have been answered. As of today, meet Caitlyn Jenner in all her glory on the cover of Vanity Fair.
Stunning in a white one piece corseted bodysuit with large ringlets framing her face and the line, “Call me Caitlyn,” across the front, Caitlyn Jenner has made a one-of-a-kind debut to the world. With a half-smile on her lips, we have a feeling that Caitlyn is finally satisfied. As Jenner said, “As soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I’m free.”
Caitlyn is an amazing transition from what we saw on the Diane Sawyer ABC special a few months ago. A 10-hour facial feminization surgery in March and breast implants were just a few aspects of the transition. As GLAAD states and as Caitlyn has expressed, it is appropriate to now use the female pronoun when referring to her and to use her new name, even though Jenner has stated that she doesn’t get too upset when people use the wrong pronoun because even she messes up sometimes! Transitions for transgender persons is not always an easy process and by referring to Jenner as Caitlyn and by using the new pronoun, it shows respect and understanding toward Caitlyn Jenner and all transgender persons who have made, are making, or will make the transition to their true identities.
Even though Bruce Jenner was praised for years for his Olympic athlete prowess, Caitlyn is quite adamant when she says that this cover isn’t about the glory: “, it’s not about people cheering in the stadium. It’s not about going in the street and everybody giving me a ‘That-a-boy-Bruce’ pat on the back.” This is about Caitlyn introducing herself to the world, accepting who she is, and proudly showing that she is finally comfortable in her own skin.
As for her name, Caitlyn but rather is a name that embodies who she is and we couldn’t be happier for her. She’s wearing her name and her new look so perfectly. Caitlyn even began a “girls’ night” at her house with other women and even her daughter so that she could feel comfortable in her new look and talk about girls things with other women, a night where she bonded with her daughter over her new identity.
On the set of the behind-the-scenes video of the shoot, Jenner expressed that the “last few days of doing this shoot is about my life and who I am as a person.” And from this shoot we are starting to get an idea of who Caitlyn Jenner is. She is bold and beautiful. Strong and fierce. Classy with a little bit of sass. Braver than many women her age who might be self-conscious about wearing a bodysuit—but not Caitlyn! And absolutely humble to have the support of people like her stepdaughter Khloe Kardashian who tweeted the cover.
The future can only bring more happiness for Jenner who is now becoming who she has always been. As Jenner tweeted, “Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can’t wait for you to get to know her/me.”
We can’t wait either, Caitlyn.
