Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus Perform Five Local Concerts to Approve Ref 74
Seattle Men’s Chorus (SMC) and Seattle Women’s Chorus (SWC) will showcase their support for marriage equality and engage the community with a series of events titled Voices United for Marriage.
Beginning September 14, the Choruses will perform five concerts in support of approving Referendum 74 in cities throughout Western Washington during the critical pre-election months of September and October. The program will include a 90-minute set of music, stories and speakers devoted to building awareness and engaging audience members to take action to support marriage equality in the state of Washington.
“These concerts align squarely with the mission of the Choruses: to use the power of words and music to recognize the value of gay and straight people and their relationships,” said State Representative Jamie Pedersen, a longtime singing member of SMC. “By sharing the importance of Referendum 74 to our lives, we will help Washington become a place that fully accepts and values its gay and lesbian citizens.”
Rep. Pedersen, Senator Ed Murray, Rep. Laurie Jinkins, and other state and local officials are expected to attend and encourage audiences to get involved in the Washington United for Marriage campaign to approve Referendum 74.
Chorus members will also share their personal stories describing what marriage means to them, and the Choruses will also serve as facilitators for audience member reflections on the importance of marriage in their own lives. Some of the songs that will be performed include “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Dancing Queen,” “Seal Lullaby,” “Come Live With Me and Be My Love,” and “Livin’ la Vida Loca.”
“We are excited to let our voices be heard in this way and contribute the support of approving Referendum 74,” said Executive Director, Frank Stilwagner. “This is a matter of equal rights and no one should be discriminated against because of who they are, or whom they love.”
