Litota is an understated path
The richest Russian language contains manyturns of speech, expressions that allow you to give any utterance the desired emotional color, make it more or less bright. Among such terms the litot is not the last place. This is a deliberate artistic understatement that can be applied to the qualities of a person or an object, to a particular phenomenon or event. As a rule, a similar turn of speech is used if the narrator doubts that the action has been performed to the full, or whether the person owns these or other qualities in perfection.
Features of artistic reception
Litota in Russian is completethe opposite of hyperbole, which, in turn, consists in exaggeration of the qualities and properties of an object or some abilities of a person. The path we are considering is formed by using double negation in speech if it is necessary to point out the negative side of any aspect, for example: not without reason. If it is required, on the contrary, to emphasize the dignity, but not too much to praise, then the trail of the litote is formed with the help of negatively colored words, for example: not bad, not devoid of heat and so on.
Where to find the lithotope
Most often, similar turnovers in literature and ineveryday speech is used to turn the negation of something into morality. As an example, you can quote: "I'm not sure that you will be able to cope with the task." Its meaning lies in the fact that the speaker is sure that his interlocutor can not cope with the task. However, with the help of negations, he stated this directly opposite. In this case, the litote is a softening, which is used in speech in order not to declare openly about its disagreement, but to do it in a more polite form.
This downplaying and denying path is veryoften found in fiction, as well as in articles of cognitive nature. They make the text more colorful, interesting, often forcing the reader to return to the read lines, in order to better understand their meaning. Litot also use during communication at work. Often, in order to politely hint the boss or a higher-ranking employee about his possible mistakes, deliberate understatement is used in the speech. Hearing it, any person will involuntarily think about the correctness of their actions. If you tell him about the error openly, a dispute will begin.
Artistic image of the trail
Also, a litote is a technique that is very oftenoccurs in fairy tales and folk art. The understatement here is not achieved as a result of the negation of an object or phenomenon, but by identifying it with something small, tiny. An example may be the name of the phrase "a boy with a finger" or a fairy tale "A peasant with a nail". Examples can also be the expressions "a few steps from here", "three inches from the pot", "back in a second" and the like.
It is accepted to believe that the litho is all comparisons, which are used to emphasize insignificance, small size, sophistication of something. For example, it can be applied to a female figure: "the waist is thin, like a birch".
