How to paint a car?

Despite the availability of a large number of auto repair shops, some motorists prefer to do all repair work on their own, including and its painting.

To perform this type of work it is important not only to know theoretically how to paint a car with your own hands, but also to have practical skills. Body painting is carried out in stages.

Preparatory work

Many motorists ignore such an importantmoment as a choice of a place for painting a car. You can not paint under the open sky, because the dust that has settled on the fresh paint and the sticky midges will spoil the appearance of the painted car. You can use the garage for these purposes, cleaning it properly from dust and excess things before you paint the car. Of no small importance is quality lighting.

Before painting the car must be thoroughly washedand dry, and then remove from the body of decorative elements, rubber gaskets. Non-removable parts that can not be painted should be sealed with paint tape or treated with a protective mixture. Disassembly of body parts is not necessary, but greatly facilitates the procedure for painting hard-to-reach parts.

Before you paint the car yourself, you need to carefully inspect its technical condition (bottom, racks, etc.) so that after painting it is not necessary to repair the car.

Cleaning the body

First, the body needs to be cleaned from the previous onepaint and varnish coating. This is done using a manual or mechanical tool. To facilitate the process, the surface of the body can be pre-coated with a flushing compound.

After this, the body is checked for rust. Areas damaged by corrosion can be cleaned mechanically or physically. Mechanical cleaning involves the use of a metal brush, a grinding paper with a large grain or other abrasive material. For cleaning a large area it is convenient to use an orbital machine. To prevent the formation of dust, rusty areas are wetted with white spirit.

There are special acid solutions foretching rust. After processing them, rust can be removed with rags and the surface treated with a solvent. If the rust has penetrated deeply into the metal, it must be previously cleaned.

After cleaning from the old paint and corrosion, the surface is degreased with white spirit.

Elimination of defects

If there is no possibility to provide a smooth surface with straightening, it should be leveled with putty. The thickness of the layer should be minimal, since puttypaintingdeteriorates the mechanical properties of the coating. For epoxy putties, the maximum application layer is 2 mm, for nitrocellulose and alkyd - 3 mm, but it is applied gradually in thin layers.

After the putty has dried, the surface is ground. To detect the existing pores in the putty, a layer of powder is applied to the area. If there are pores or potholes, the puttying procedure is repeated. The resulting smooth surface is again degreased.

Body priming

The prepared surface is covered with soil. It not only enhances the adhesion of the paint to the metal and protects against corrosion, but also hides the small defects left after the putty. Types of primer:

  • acrylic - it is made on a water basis, it is suitable for paintingpaintingall kinds of paints;
  • epoxy - as much as possible smooths irregularities from putty, provides a reliable protection against corrosion;
  • Adhesive - provides adhesion to the plastic parts of the body.

The primer is available in white and black colors and is used depending on the future color of the car. You can mix primers of the same manufacturer to achieve the desired tone.

The primer is sprayed in two layers before painting the car. Layers are applied perpendicular to each other with intermediate drying.

Further, the surface of the ground is subjected to grinding by emery paper with grain 800 for subsequent application of paint with varnish or 600 - for acrylic paint.

Painting

Types of paints for cars differ in their characteristics and method of application

  1. Acrylic paints. Paints based on acrylic are easy to apply, quickly dry, give the surface shine. Such a surface is resistant to negative environmental influences and ultraviolet radiation.
  2. Paints with the effect of "metallic". A metallic shade is given to the body by a layer of nitro-paint, on which an acrylic lacquer is applied.

How to paint a car with a brush

Brush painted small, but hard to reachsites, the appearance of which is not subject to increased requirements. In most cases, the brush is used to apply slowly drying paints. For coloring, choose flat or round brushes with soft bristles.

The brush is lowered into the paint by a third of its length, and the excess ink is pressed against the edgepaintingcapacity. The paint is applied back and forth by a thin layer. The brush is kept at an angle of 50-60 °.

Auto spray paint spraying

The method of spraying paint with an airbrush allowseffectively paint large surfaces. Correctly selected nozzle diameter, depending on the viscosity of the paint, will allow it to be applied evenly without streaks and unevenness.

When painting, the spray gun must be ondistance of about 30 cm from the surface, and the jet is directed strictly vertically. The paint is applied by continuous uniform movements, bands overlapping each other by 50%.

It is difficult for inexperienced motorists to achieve an ideal result from the first time. But small defects in the course of painting can be corrected by polishing.
