DrainDrainage is an important element of both residential and country house. Its absence can lead to accelerated destruction of the building. The system itself is quite simple, so it can be done on its own. In this article we will talk about how to make yourself and how to carry out the installation of drain. Find out what materials can be used and what types of drainage systems are.

Why is the drain so important?

Any building is faced with a negative impact of the external environment, in particular with rain and melt water. The lack of drainage leads to the fact that a large amount of water collapses on the facade and basement of the building, an excess of moisture destroys the structure from the outside and leads to an increase in the humidity level in the interior of the building. Here you can buy the most modern and affordable materials for the installation of drainage devices.

Do-it-yourself installation of gutters will allow you to avoid all these problems and save a lot.In this article, you are presented with instructions that will help you to make and install a drain yourself. Below you will also find an instructional video.

What are the gutters made of?

As a rule, for the manufacture of gutters use two types of materials: metal or plastic. The most economical version of the drain, which can be installed in the country or in a residential building, is a drain from such a type of metal as galvanized steel.

The drainage system made of plastic against the background of the metal counterpart certainly looks advantageous, however, its strength is substantially less than the strength of the galvanized steel version. A cold winter can completely destroy the entire plastic construction, because water tends to expand when it freezes, which means that if it freezes in a plastic pipe, it can simply break it. With a solid metal pipe this will not happen.

DrainHowever, making roof gutters with our own hands, we can give freedom to our creative abilities and fantasies, and make even the simplest metal drainage presentable, for example, some elements can be painted to match the color of the tiles on the house.Therefore, it is better to give preference to the use of galvanized steel.

Another drainage variant is a design based on metal sheets, covered with colored polymer from the outside. Beautiful, but unfortunately, quite an expensive option - use in the manufacture of copper sheets.

Useful advice: if the roof of the roof of your house is made of soft tiles, then the drain should be made of PVC. Why PVC? The fact is that the roofs of soft tiles are composed of stone chips, which can destroy metal structures. PVC is resistant to such a crumb.

What kinds of gutters are there?

Drains vary depending on the place where they were installed. Thus, they can be divided into two groups:

  • external;
  • internal.

More familiar to us - external gutters, at least, being outside the building, they often fall into our field of vision. Installing external gutters is much easier than internal, and this design is exactly what you need in the country.

As for the internal drain, they are ideal for flat roofs and for structures that are located in areas where there are very low temperatures.Such drainage systems are designed and assembled in parallel with the design and construction of houses.

Device

Now let's understand what the drainage system consists of. Mandatory elements of this design are the following:

  • drainpipe;
  • drain;
  • gutter

In addition to these basic elements, you will need some additional components that will help fix the entire structure and connect its individual parts.
Drain device
On the image above, the drain device is represented visually.

Pay attention to a very important point: before installing a drain, prepare storm sewers or a special drainage system. If all the rain and melt water will go under construction, then, ultimately, it can harm the building.

On the Internet, for sure there will be a detailed instruction that will tell you how to properly make storm sewer or drainage. Various tutorial videos will also be good helpers. The video will vividly demonstrate the device system for the discharge of storm and melt water from the house.

Gutter drain

The chute can be made from metal sheets.The form can be any, at your discretion, as a rule, it is a semicircle or a half of a rectangle.

GutterThe procedure will be as follows:

  • cut metal sheets into strips of the required width and length (it all depends on the size of the roof of your building);
  • If you chose a semicircular shape of the gutter, then you can give the desired bend to the metal strip with the help of a piece of pipe - put a metal plate on the pipe and bend it to the shape of this pipe;
  • the edges of the resulting gutter must be bent, this will give the gutter the necessary rigidity;
  • if desired, it is even possible to fix the edges of the folded strip with transverse straps in order to stabilize the shape;
  • rectangular gutters are made with a special bending machine or simply a corner.

As for the height of the gutter walls, the closer the gutter is to the ground, the higher these walls should be. Otherwise, the water falling from a great height will simply spill out.

You can purchase ready-made gutters and collect everything from them yourself.

What tools will need for installation?

Starting installation of a drain, it is necessary to get the following tools:

  • scissors for metal;
  • ticks;
  • mandrels;
  • flaring

Assembly work

Gutter MountingNow we proceed to the most crucial stage in the construction of a roof drain - we begin the installation. In addition to the manufactured gutters, you should prepare:

  • drain pipes;
  • funnels into which water will fall;
  • brackets to fix the system;
  • caps;
  • fittings.

The brackets are required to secure the gutters. The optimal distance between them is 50 centimeters. Starting the installation of the gutter, first of all, install the first and the last bracket, so you will immediately receive the required slope, you will not have to redo it later.

Once the first and last bracket is installed, pull the cord between them. This cord will serve as a guide: you need to install intermediate brackets over it.

It is worth noting that you do not need to overdo it with the slope of the chute. It will be correct to make a slope that does not exceed 5 mm per 1 m of gutter. The absence of a slope as such will lead to the fact that rain and melt water will not have time to drain into the drain pipes, with the result that its surplus will pour out through the edges of the gutter.Consider these features, doing gutters with your own hands.

If you have to install a long gutter, which is assembled from several, then before installing it with your own hands, you need to connect all its parts with rivets before lifting to the edge of the roof, and then seal the seam with sealant. At such a height, correctly and securely connecting parts of the gutter will be difficult.

DrainThe diameter of the pipe, choose in accordance with the size of the roof. For example, if the area is approximately 80 square meters. m, the optimal diameter of the pipe will be equal to ten centimeters, if 160 square meters. m - the optimal diameter will be 14 cm.

To connect the parts of the drain pipes, erecting a drain with your own hands, use clamps. When installing the pipes, remember that they must be inserted into each other, and the overlap should be at least 2 cm. The installation of pipes on the wall is also carried out using clamps. Remember that the pipe should be strictly vertical.

To get a flat vertical, install the pipe in the following way:

  • install the upper clamp;
  • fix the plummet on it.

The drain device requires connecting pipes with hose clips strictly in the direction of water running off.

So, the gutters are fixed, connected to the drain pipes.The pipes are securely attached to the wall, and all the seams are sealed, which means that the installation is completed, the drain is ready with your own hands, and the building is reliably protected from the negative effects of storm and melt water.

Cleaning

In order for the drainage system to work without failures, it must be periodically cleaned from various debris. Very intensively litter the drain of fallen leaves, so the drain must be cleaned before the onset of winter. Cleaning throughout the year is very welcome.
