Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Season 8, Episode 12 (Hope for the Hopeless)
I was fully prepared for another tearjerker of an episode – it seems as if Shonda Rhimes has been playing the despair card quite often these days. But despite a few sad moments, the episode wasn’t a complete and total drag.
Webber celebrated his 10,000th surgery…holy cow, that’s a lot of surgeries! I’m glad they touched base on this a little bit, he deserves some recognition despite not being the Chief any more.
Derek and Lexie took on a boy with a brain tumor, and to my surprise they weren’t able to fix this adorable and sincere child. It broke my heart that the little boy was the one being strong for his emotional wreck of a mother despite knowing that he was going to die very soon.
Adele’s memory continued to deteriorate to the point where she showed up at the hospital and began shouting into the OR where Webber was with Meredith. Adele thought that Meredith was Ellis Grey, and confronted “her” about stealing her husband. It was all very depressing. Webber took control of the situation and was able to talk Adele down by singing “Funny Valentine,” to her.
Two sisters came in, one needing a liver transplant and the other sister holding it over her head that she was about to save her sibling from death. There was a lot of banter going on between the two and it sort of reminded me of how caddy sisters can be. My sister and I fight all the time but when it comes down to it, we wouldn’t hold saving one another’s life over their head. It was just…annoying to say the least.
Henry’s death is still looming over the people of Seattle Grace, especially Teddy. Cristina and Teddy seem to be coping together by performing back-to-back surgeries. The two even went as far as to steal a surgery from Karev and Dr. McQueen. Yang completely manipulated the wife of the patient in order to get them back on the surgery even though Hunt wanted them to sit this one out and get some rest. It was actually pretty badass, even if it was a cheap shot.
On the not so important home front, Arizona and Callie are trying to force Mark to tell his girlfriend that he loves her; we get the vibe that he’s not ready to say those words, seeing as he pushed Lexie into the love, living and almost becoming a grandma situation. Also, Mer and Der throw a birthday party for Zola.
Hunt arrives at Zola’s party, only to see Cristina playing with the toddler. You could totally tell that something was going on inside Hunt’s head and we were close to finding out what it was exactly. After some banter, Yang telling Hunt that Teddy gets whatever she wants and can still be mad at him, and then Cristina not taking responsibility for snagging the surgery, the truth finally came out: Owen was still pissed at Cristina for killing their unborn child. I’m not sure these two are going to be able to get through this one.
Meredith finally chooses general surgery as her area of expertise. She originally didn’t want to choose this because it is what her mother did and she wants to be nothing like her mother, but after a little pep talk from Webber, she realizes that she’s nothing like her mother.
All in all it was a pretty good episode. I liked how it revisited the tension of Cristina-Owen baby drama and how everything is coming back full-circle. The next episode preview proves to be extremely promising. I don’t think I’ve ever been more excited for a Grey’s ep before.
