Geraldine Ferraro Paved the Way for Female Politicians Everywhere – RIP

Geraldine Ferraro

On Saturday we lost a brilliant politician – Geraldine Ferraro. Ferraro was a leader dedicated to the promotion of justice for women and was the first woman nominated to the Democratic Party ticket.

After serving for three terms in the House of Representatives from 1979 to 1984 the announcement of Ferraro as Vice President to Walter Mondale raised the hopes of a new generation of women.

A daughter of Italian immigrants, Ferraro grew up in New York City’s South Bronx area. Finishing high school at age 16, she taught second grade in the public school system while putting herself through law school at night. After being admitted to the New York State bar in 1961, Ferraro worked part-time as a civil lawyer while raising three children with her husband, becoming Assistant District Attorney for Queens County, New York in 1974.

Active in politics after her campaign for national office, Ferraro was appointed to lead the United States delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission. There she served as a public delegate in February 1993 and alternate U.S. delegate to the World Conference on Human Rights in June 1993.

Ferraro continued to work, assuming an honorary post on the finance committee for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign and continuing to engage the public on current political issues as a Fox News Channel contributor. She also wrote two and numerous articles during this time. Commenting on the recent presidential and vice presidential bids by women, Ferraro said that “Every time a women runs, women win.”

Succumbing to complications from multiple myeloma, Ferraro was 75 when she died. She was surrounded by family.
